About the Artwork:
January 7, 2017 - In yesterday's Los Angeles Times, I happened on an article in the Calendar section by staff writer Carolina Miranda who's covered arts and culture for the Times since 2014. She titled the article: John Berger set my mind on fire. The charismatic art critic taught me not just to look at an image but 'through' it.
The British art critic, artist and novelist had just died at his home in France at age 90. This piece was Carolina's brief remembrance of him and her moment in high school when her teacher conducted his class around Berger's British Broadcasting (BBC), 4-part series "Ways of Seeing", which had profoundly affected her at the time.
A Word From the Artist, directly from his self published Art Inventory Volumes:
I am not a formally trained artist committed to earning my living from the making of art. I am a recycler. I desire only to use up stuff lying around; stuff I've accumulated and save throughout my working life. I am self-taught. I am an outlier and a recluse. Within the contemporary world of postmodern art and academia, I'd be looked upon as a relic of times passed. And if I am indeed a relic, it is due to my admiration for all of those Modern artists who pushed the envelope between the years 1900-1970.
I am an unabashed rock n' roller. I feel at home with punk-ass rock n' roll and its funky roadhouse cousins when I create art. I've been attracted to the idea of making art since high school int he 1950s. But, I've never aspired to formally study art or art theory or to be an artist, per se. I've only ever aspired to live out my personal vision of a romantic life, work hard, experience the wilder world, and make art when I am able.
